What it is
A gypsum panel between two layers of paper that replaced wet plaster over lath. It is screwed or nailed to a frame, reducing building time and skilled labour.
The first panel (1894) was patented by Sackett and its modern commercial version is USG's (Sheetrock, 1916-1917); the exact place and date of each step are uncertain.
What it led to
- low-cost dry partitions and ceilings
- faster, drier house building
- light steel-and-gypsum framed systems
