What was discovered
Fundamental theorem of axonometry: three segments of equal length sharing a common origin, in arbitrary position on the plane, can be interpreted as the parallel projection of a cube's three edges. Stated in 1853 and first proved by Hermann Amandus Schwarz in 1864.
What it led to
- theoretical foundation of axonometric drawing
- parallel-projection methods in technical and engineering drawing
- modern teaching of descriptive geometry
- applications in computer graphics and CAD
