⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.

What it is

A drill with an electric motor in the body and handle that an operator could carry from one workpiece to another without relying on a fixed machine. Wilhelm Fein presented it in 1895 in Stuttgart.

Arnot and Wilhelm Fein were nearly simultaneous: Arnot introduced the electric drill in 1889 in Melbourne and Fein the portable hand-held drill in 1895 in Stuttgart; there is no agreement about which was truly the first portable one.

What it led to

  • on-site drilling in shipyards, assembly and building
  • portable electric hand tools
  • the pistol-grip drills of Black & Decker
