What it is

The first printed nautical atlas, with charts of western European coasts, sailing directions and coastal profiles. It set the model of the printed pilot book and gave English the word 'waggoner' for sea atlases.

Waghenaer published it in Leiden at the Plantin press; the English edition (1588) was The Mariners Mirrour.

What it led to

  • printed sea atlases and pilot books of the 17th-18th centuries
  • Dutch nautical cartography
  • standardised symbols and soundings on charts
