What was discovered
The quantum state of a photon is transferred to a distant one using an entangled pair and two classical bits, without any particle travelling. It demonstrates that entanglement is an operational resource for quantum communication.
De Martini's group in Rome published an almost simultaneous alternative scheme (1998); Innsbruck published in Nature in December 1997.
