What it is
Liebherr's TK 10 was a transportable tower crane that unfolded on site with fast erection and a small crew. It made lifting materials to great height and reach affordable in postwar reconstruction.
Tower cranes existed from the early 20th century; Liebherr's novelty is ease of erection and transport. The 'first' attribution is commercial.
What it led to
- tall-building sites with a fixed crane at the centre
- self-erecting and climbing cranes that rise with the building
- modernisation of postwar construction
