What was discovered
From experimental observations, Raoult postulated that the partial vapor pressure of each component of an ideal liquid mixture equals the vapor pressure of the pure component multiplied by its mole fraction. The law, combined with Dalton's, became a pillar of distillation and the study of solutions.
Raoult was a professor at the University of Grenoble at that time; the source consulted does not confirm the exact city.
What it led to
- Distillation technology
- Study of azeotropes and activity coefficients
