What it is
Between March and July 2015 a trial in Guinea vaccinated the contacts of every Ebola case with rVSV-ZEBOV. It showed high efficacy in a short time and led to the licensing of the first Ebola vaccine.
The final results (Henao-Restrepo et al., Lancet 2017) confirmed efficacy; the ring design recalls that of smallpox eradication (Fenner).
What it led to
- the Ervebo vaccine (approved in 2019)
- campaigns against the DRC outbreak of 2018-2020
- design of trials in health emergencies
