What it is
A map projection that sacrifices exact angles and areas for a visually balanced view of the whole planet, defined by coordinate tables rather than a mathematical formula. Commissioned by Rand McNally, it was also used by the National Geographic Society from 1988 to 1998.
Devised by Arthur H. Robinson in 1963 at Rand McNally's request; construction details were published in 1974.
What it led to
- general-purpose world maps by Rand McNally from 1963
- adoption by the National Geographic Society (1988-1998)
- its later replacement by the Winkel tripel projection
