What it is
Runge proposed in 1895 a family of iterative methods for numerically solving differential equations without needing their higher-order derivatives, and Kutta generalized and systematized it in 1901, producing the fourth-order variant most used today.
What it led to
- Standard numerical simulation in engineering, physics and meteorology
- Integrators used in modern scientific software (rocket control, weather forecasting)
