⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.
What it is
Painted Naqada II vessels and a Gerzeh fragment showing reed or plank boats with a mast and a square sail, the earliest secure depiction of sailing. It harnesses the north wind to travel up the Nile against the current.
The H3 boat model (Kuwait, c. 5300 BCE) and a Uruk seal may show earlier masts, but there is no consensus.
What it led to
- The Nile as a two-way highway: the unification of Egypt and trade with Nubia
- Open-water sailing in the Mediterranean and the Gulf with fewer rowers
- The first human harnessing of wind energy
