What it is
A 64-megabit dynamic memory prototype developed by Samsung in 1992 and presented as the world's first of that capacity. It marks the Korean industry's shift from follower to leader in memory chips.
'First 64 Mb' is Samsung's version; other makers (mainly Japanese) showed prototypes of that capacity in the same years, so it is a leadership milestone more than an undisputed first.
What it led to
- Samsung's leadership in DRAM from 1992
- 256 Mb and 1 Gb memories of the mid-1990s
- the rise of the Korean semiconductor industry
