What it is
A canard biplane in which Santos-Dumont took off under its own power, without rail or catapult, and covered 220 m in 21.5 s, certified by the Aéro-Club de France. In Brazil it is regarded as the first aeroplane.
The Wright brothers flew in 1903, but with a rail or catapult; the 14-bis is the first publicly certified flight with unassisted takeoff. Priority depends on the criterion of 'unassisted takeoff'.
What it led to
- The first official flight records in Europe
- European aviation of the 1900s-1910s
- A Brazilian claim to the paternity of aviation
