What it is
The Colombian-German Air Transport Society was founded in Barranquilla in 1919, with Junkers F 13 seaplanes that linked the Magdalena River and the Andean interior, where there was no railway or road. It is the origin of Avianca, one of the oldest airlines still operating.
KLM (1919) is the oldest still operating under its name; Avianca (SCADTA's heir) claims to be the second in the world. SCADTA's first regular flights were in 1921.
What it led to
- air mail and transport over geography with no roads in South America
- commercial aviation in Colombia and Ecuador
- Avianca, born of the merger of SCADTA and SACO in 1940
