What was discovered
Berkeley produced Sg-263 by bombarding californium-249 with oxygen-18 in the SuperHILAC; Dubna made the same claim that year with chromium and lead. The IUPAC gave priority to Berkeley in 1997.
The IUPAC had temporarily banned naming elements after living people in 1994.
What it led to
- First element named after a living person (Seaborg)
- Confirmation of group 6 behaviour
- End of the series of US-USSR disputes
Built on
- SuperHILAC
- Californium-249
Made possible
- Aqueous chemistry of seaborgium
