What it is
Concrete so fluid it fills formwork and flows between reinforcement without vibration, thanks to superplasticisers and fines that prevent segregation. It cuts noise and labour and improves quality in densely reinforced members.
Okamura conceived it in 1986 due to durability problems and a shortage of skilled workers; the prototype was made in 1988. It spread in Europe in the 1990s.
What it led to
- high-quality precast concrete
- urban concrete works without vibrators
- high-strength and recycled concretes
