What it is
A cryptographic hash function standard based on the Keccak sponge construction, published by NIST in 2015 as an alternative to SHA-1 and SHA-2, with a fully different internal design.
What it led to
- a structurally different alternative to the SHA-1/SHA-2 family in case they were broken
- use of the sponge construction in other primitives (stream ciphers, AEAD)
- adoption in modern cryptographic protocols and libraries
- the basis of variants such as Keyak and Ketje
