What it is
A system of gyroscopes and accelerometers that integrates the ship's accelerations to derive position with no external reference. USS Nautilus used it in 1958 to cross the Arctic under the ice.
What it led to
- navigation without external signals while submerged
- submarine ballistic missiles with accurate position
- inertial navigation in aircraft and spacecraft
