What it is
A system that detects short-range rockets and artillery shells by radar, computes whether they threaten populated areas and fires interceptor missiles only against those. It entered service in March 2011 and made its first interception in April that year.
Its interception rate has been debated (official figures above 85-90%, questioned by independent analyses).
What it led to
- layered missile defence (David's Sling, Arrow)
- similar systems in other countries
- doctrines for defending populated areas
