What it is
An iron alloy with 2-4% silicon, which raises resistivity and reduces hysteresis and eddy-current losses. It made possible the laminated cores of transformers and motors.
What it led to
- laminated cores for power transformers
- Goss's grain-oriented steel (1934)
- more efficient motors and generators
