What it is
An iron ship 211 m long with a cellular double hull, paddle wheels and a screw. It was the largest in the world for 40 years and laid the 1866 transatlantic telegraph cable.
It failed commercially because of its size, but its double bottom and longitudinal bulkheads influenced later naval architecture.
What it led to
- transoceanic telegraph cables
- the double hull of modern ships
- high-tonnage ocean liners
