What it is
Stampfer devised a rotating disc with slits and sequential drawings that, when spun in front of a mirror, produced the illusion of continuous motion: the optical principle that gave the stroboscope its name. He patented the invention in Austria in May 1833, almost simultaneously with the Belgian Joseph Plateau's independent creation of the phenakistoscope.
Plateau and Stampfer arrived at the same idea independently and almost simultaneously in late 1832; Stampfer was first to patent it, in May 1833.
