What it is
A seventeen-book work describing the known world by region, with its history, resources and peoples, summarising earlier Greek geography. It is the great geographical description of the Roman Empire.
Strabo wrote around the turn of the era and revised the work until c. AD 23; the location refers to his home town, not to where it was written.
What it led to
- preservation of passages of Eratosthenes, Hipparchus and Posidonius, now lost
- a model of regional human geography until the Renaissance
