What it is
A tube with mirrors or prisms and lenses that lets a submerged submarine view the surface. Grubb designed in Dublin the periscope of the Royal Navy's first Holland submarines.
Marie-Davy built a periscope in 1854 and Lake used one in his 1902 submarine; Grubb designed that of the 1901 Holland submarines. Priority is debated and varies by type.
