What it is
A system of textured ground surface indicators (truncated domes or bars) installed at crossings, stairs and platforms to warn visually impaired pedestrians of a hazard or grade change.
There is disagreement between designers and users over whether installing it indoors may create a tripping hazard.
What it led to
- Japanese accessibility standard for pedestrian crossings
- Adoption of the standard in the UK, Australia and the US from the 1990s
