What it is
An instrument that measures distances of up to tens of kilometres by comparing the phase of microwaves sent to and returned from a remote station. It replaced slow triangulation with tapes and theodolites in surveying.
Presented in 1957; it was manufactured and exported on a large scale in the 1960s.
What it led to
- rapid geodetic surveys worldwide
- electronic total stations
- mapping of large territories
