What was discovered
Tepexpan man is a prehistoric human skeleton discovered in February 1947 by archaeologist Helmut de Terra on the shores of the former Lake Texcoco, near mammoth remains. It was originally claimed to be over 10,000 years old.
The originally claimed age (over 10,000 years) was questioned by later studies, which place it in a more recent period.
What it led to
- Debate over the antiquity of human settlement in Mexico
- Boost to Pleistocene archaeology in the Basin of Mexico
- Later revision of its dating with newer methods
