What was discovered
In electron-positron collisions, events with three jets of particles appear: a quark, an antiquark and a radiated gluon. The first direct observation of the mediator of the strong force and confirmation of QCD.
Four experiments presented evidence in 1979; no Nobel Prize has been awarded for the gluon.
