What it is
Dolivo-Dobrovolsky patented in 1889 an induction motor with a squirrel-cage rotor and a complete three-phase system with generator, transformer and three-wire line. It is the most widely used industrial motor today.
Tesla had patented a polyphase motor in 1888 and Ferraris had shown the principle; Dolivo's contribution is the cage rotor and the three-wire three-phase system.
What it led to
- the Lauffen-Frankfurt transmission (1891)
- industry driven by induction motors
- squirrel cage and three-phase starters
