What it is

A 2.2 km line between Asakusa and Ueno (now the Ginza Line) opened on 30 December 1927 at 600 V third-rail, the first metro in Asia. Hayakawa conceived it after visiting London, and it was privately financed.

Osaka opened in 1933 and Nagoya in 1957; Tokyo's was the first on the Asian continent.

What it led to

  • one of the busiest metro networks in the world
  • real-estate development around stations
  • a model for later Asian metros: Osaka, Seoul, Beijing
