What it is

Binzel presented in 1995 a "hazard index" for near-Earth objects that combines impact probability and expected kinetic damage into a single 0-10 scale; a revised version was adopted at an international conference in Turin in 1999, which gave it its final name.

The first version, called the "Near-Earth Object Hazard Index," was presented by Binzel at MIT at a UN conference in 1995; the scale took its final name after being revised and adopted in Turin in 1999.

What it led to

  • Standardized public communication of asteroid impact risk
  • 2005 revision to reduce media misinterpretation of Level 1
