What it is
A 9,289 km line between Moscow and Vladivostok begun in 1891 and finished with the Amur bridge in 1916. It is the longest railway in the world and joined Europe and the Pacific in a week or so.
The main stretch was running by about 1904; the Amur bridge (1916) closed the link with no ferry crossings. Today it is largely electrified and double-track.
What it led to
- colonisation and economy of Siberia and the Russian Far East
- Eurasian routes for freight and troops
- geopolitical tensions with Japan that led to the Russo-Japanese War
