What it is
A movable bridge in which a gondola hung from a tall span carries vehicles and people from one bank to the other while allowing ships to pass beneath; a very rare bridge type.
The first was the Vizcaya Bridge, designed by Spanish engineer Alberto Palacio; only about a dozen remain in use worldwide today.
What it led to
- A river-crossing solution that did not interrupt shipping
- A model copied by a handful of bridges in Europe and the Americas
Built on
- Bascule bridges and metal-structure bridges
