What was discovered
A theorem stating that the product of any collection of compact topological spaces is compact under the product topology, first proved for powers of the unit interval by Andrey Tychonoff.
What it led to
- A foundational result in general topology
- Basis for weak-* compactness in functional analysis (Banach-Alaoglu theorem)
- A link between topology, logic and the axiom of choice
- Later extension to spaces based on fuzzy sets
