What was discovered
A Celtic burial mound of the so-called Lady of Vix, dating to about 500 BC, found undisturbed with a rich array of grave goods including the great Vix bronze krater, the largest known metal vessel from Western classical antiquity.
What it led to
- key reference for the study of Iron Age Celtic aristocracy (Hallstatt/La Tène)
- boost to European Iron Age funerary archaeology
- the Vix krater as an emblematic piece of exchange between the Greek world and Gaul
