What it is
Carlson, a patent attorney self-taught in physics, produced in a rented room in Astoria the first dry copy of a document by electrostatically charging a photoconductive plate and fixing the toner with heat, without liquid ink or wet chemicals. After years of industry rejection, Haloid (later Xerox) commercialized the process and in 1959 launched the automatic Xerox 914 copier, which transformed offices worldwide.
