What it is
A planographic printing process using zinc plates instead of the limestone of traditional lithography, allowing drawings and illustrations to be reproduced more cheaply and quickly; perfected by Firmin Gillot in Paris.
What it led to
- Cheaper printed illustration in newspapers and books
- A precedent for photoengraving and offset image reproduction
- Large-scale color-printed maps and topographic charts
