What it is
A Canadian satellite carrying a topside ionospheric sounder that mapped the layer from above. It made Canada the third country to design and build a satellite, although the United States launched it.
Launched from Vandenberg (California) on a Thor-Agena rocket. The builder's laboratory was at Shirleys Bay, Ottawa.
What it led to
- the ISIS programme and Canadian science satellites
- systematic study of the ionosphere and shortwave communications
- Canada's space industry (later the Canadarm)
