What it is
A household washing machine that washes, rinses and spins by itself, with a horizontal drum and an automatic programme, without user intervention. It was the first automatic household washing machine.
Electric washers with wringers existed from 1908; the Bendix was the first automatic one, though Westinghouse's model and other brands later outsold it.
What it led to
- laundry without manual labour or wringers
- self-service laundries and basic domestic appliances
- modern front-loading washers
