What was discovered
Equal volumes of gases at the same pressure and temperature contain the same number of molecules; it distinguishes atoms from molecules (H2, O2). Ignored until Cannizzaro established it at the Karlsruhe Congress (1860).
Ampère proposed a similar hypothesis in 1814.
What it led to
- Correct molecular weights
- Concept of the mole and Avogadro's number
- Mendeleev's periodic table
Built on
Made possible
- Ideal gas law1834
- Consistent atomic weights (Cannizzaro, Karlsruhe Congress)1860
- determination of molar mass by vapour density
