What it is
A transitional type with high contrast and fine serifs, used in the 1757 Virgil on glazed paper with black ink. It foreshadowed modern romans.
Baskerville was also a maker of glazed (wove) paper and ink; contemporaries criticised the contrast for dazzling the eye.
What it led to
- highly crafted books such as the Cambridge Virgil
- the Didone types of Bodoni and Didot
- digital revivals used in modern publishing
