What it is
A roman of fine strokes and elegant proportions cut by Claude Garamond, first used in 1530 in a work by Erasmus printed by Robert Estienne. It became the model for European romans.
Many modern 'Garamonds' are based on types by Jean Jannon (c. 1621), not Garamond; the originals were cut in the 1530s.
What it led to
- 16th-century French romans
- revivals such as Monotype Garamond and Sabon
- a benchmark for book legibility
