What was discovered
A peptide released from plasma by snake venom or trypsin that dilates vessels and lowers blood pressure slowly (hence 'brady-kinin', slow movement). It opened the study of kinins and their role in inflammation and vascular regulation.
The finding was made in late 1948 with Bothrops jararaca venom and published in 1949 in the American Journal of Physiology.
What it led to
- Study of kinins in inflammation and pain
- ACE-inhibitor drugs such as captopril (1975-1981)
- Pharmacology of snake venoms
