What it is

An 828 m tower opened in 2010, with a reinforced-concrete buttressed-core structure in a Y plan that resists wind and reduces its effect on the tower. It has been the world's tallest building since then.

It has been the world's tallest building since 2010; it may be surpassed by the Jeddah Tower, whose construction has been halted several times. The tower uses concrete, with a steel spire.

What it led to

  • concrete pumped to more than 600 m and new elevator systems
  • projected towers of over 1 km (Jeddah Tower)
  • a model of urban development in the Gulf
