What it is
The military engineer Julio Cervera patented wireless telegraphy systems in 1899 and in 1901-1902 set up regular links between Tarifa and Ceuta, and between Cape Nao and Ibiza. They are among the first regular radiotelegraph services after Marconi's.
Priority in wireless telegraphy belongs to Marconi, Popov, Tesla and others. It is often said that Cervera transmitted voice between Jávea and Ibiza in 1902, but there is no verified documentary proof of voice transmission; only the telegraph links are well established.
What it led to
- the Spanish Wireless Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (1902)
- wireless communication between the Peninsula, the Balearics and North Africa
- Cervera's patents in Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany
