What it is
A liturgical book printed in Cyrillic at the Crnojević court in Montenegro by hieromonk Makarije. It is the first book printed among the Serbs, Montenegrins and other South Slavs, and the first printing press in the Balkans.
The press worked in Obod (Rijeka Crnojevića) from 1493 and moved to Cetinje; the colophon date is 1494. It follows the Kraków Osmoglasnik (1491), which remains the first printed Cyrillic book; the Cetinje one is the first in the Balkans.
What it led to
- South Slavic Cyrillic printing (Venice, Târgoviște and Belgrade followed)
- spread of Orthodox liturgical books outside Russia and Poland
