What it is

A German printer settled in Kraków who cut the first Cyrillic movable types and in 1491 printed four liturgical books in Church Slavonic, including the Oktoechos. He opened printing to the Cyrillic script.

Fiol was tried for printing Orthodox books in 1491. The Cetinje Oktoih (1493) is the first book printed on South Slavic soil.

What it led to

  • the first books printed in Cyrillic
  • later Cyrillic presses at Cetinje (1493), Târgoviște (1508) and Prague/Vilnius (Skaryna, 1517-1525)
  • printed circulation of Church Slavonic in the Orthodox world
