What was discovered

At constant pressure, the volume of a gas is proportional to its absolute temperature. Together with Boyle's law, it leads to the ideal gas equation of state and the concept of absolute zero.

Charles did not publish; Gay-Lussac (1802) and Dalton (1801) published equivalent results and credited Charles.

What it led to

  • Ideal gas equation
  • Absolute temperature scale
  • Thermodynamics
