What was discovered
Gases react in volumes that bear simple whole-number ratios to one another (e.g. 2 volumes of hydrogen plus 1 of oxygen give 2 of water vapour). It clashed with Dalton's theory and was resolved by Avogadro's hypothesis.
What it led to
- Avogadro's hypothesis
- Molecular formulae
- Volumetric gas analysis
