⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.
What was discovered
In February 1928 Landsberg and Mandelstam observe shifted lines in light scattered by quartz, corresponding to vibrations of the crystal lattice. It is Raman scattering discovered independently.
Raman and Krishnan published it on 28 February 1928 for liquids and Raman received the Nobel Prize (1930); the Soviets observed it on 21 February and published later. Priority is disputed.
What it led to
- spectroscopy of molecular and crystal vibrations
- identification of substances by their spectra
- belated recognition of Soviet priority
